Die Kunskamer was established in 1971 as a gallery dealing exclusively in premium South African art. Under the direction of Louis and Charlotte Schachat the gallery rapidly earned a reputation as a hallmark for keen local and international collectors seeking South African masters and established contemporary art.
Die Kunskamer first opened its doors in Church Street, Cape Town and was one of a small number of pioneering galleries to exhibit a generation of artists who have not only become household names but have achieved record-breaking results internationally.
Significantly after many years at the V&A Waterfront, we currently are back operating from Fresnaye, where Louis and Charlotte’s ardent passion for South African Art began. In 2013 Charlotte took over the management of Die Kunskamer and November 2021 marks the momentous 50th year of our continued commitment to South African Art.
As a gallery, Die Kunskamer not only values the old masters but also looks to the future by promoting up and coming South African contemporary artists.
The gallery also advises private collectors, corporations on acquisitions and assists its clients in the development of their personal collections. If you are thinking of selling your art we accept works on consignment.
Die Kunskamer, is open for viewing by appointment and looks forward to your visit.
